The Warwickshire village of Kineton lies on the River Dene and is part of the district of Stratford –on-Avon. Kineton lies about 10 miles from Banbury and Warwick, and was the home of race meetings in its own right from 1840, but from 1864 it hosted meetings organised by the North Warwickshire Hunt group. That first joint meeting took place on Wednesday 30th March 1864, while the next year the meeting on Easter Monday 1865 opened with a match in which the outsider of two, Huntsman beat sole rival Nimrod. The Farmer’s Steeplechase was won by Mr Bawcutt’s Eily O’Connor, while the valuable Kineton Chase fell to Mr Garratt’s Emblematic. The final meeting at Kineton took place on Monday 5th April 1869, after which the course hosted point to point meetings. The North Warwickshire switched location to Packington in 1873 and Campion Hill, Leamington Spa between 1875 and 1909. The final meeting took place on Wednesday 31st March 1909 when the day began with luncheon served courtesy of the hunt members. The racing began with the Hunters Steeplechase which went to Miss E B Dalziel’s Warder, while the prestigious Campion Hill Chase was won by Mr C F K Mainwaring’s Street Arab. There were no meetings in 1910 and the final meeting on Tuesday 21st March 1911 returned to being billed as ‘Leamington races’. |
